Heavy Metals Testing

We can test flower, concentrates, edibles, tinctures, capsules, leaves and soil. While growers most likely aren’t applying these compounds during their grow, the environment around us and the soil and nutrient applications can introduce contaminants. Cannabis plants are known to remediate certain elements (take them up from their roots), yet little is understood yet as to the mechanism and parts of the plant might sequester these compounds. In addition, the packaging and cartridges used to store and deliver cannabis formulations can be potential sources for metals.

We perform our elemental analysis using a Shimadzu ICP-MS 2030 (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer). The first step is to completely dissolve the sample with a microwave digestion accomplished with an Anton Paar Multiwave GO.

Our metals list covers the WA State DOH required heavy metals and we can also test for a large list of other elements – let us know what you’re interested in learning and we can most likely help you!

If you’re interested in testing oil that’s already inside a cartridge, we will need at least 3 ½-gram sized cartridges to get enough material for one metals test. We can also test soil, leaves and other types of matrices. Let us know what you’re interested in testing so we can best assist you!

Methods include USP <232> and <233>, EPA 200.8, and a modified EPA 6020.Method.

*µg/5g sample is the unit the regulators use for their action limits, so these numbers can be directly compared to the action limits to see how much lower they are.

ppb= parts per billion

µg/5g = microgram/5 grams of material

LOD = limit of detection

LOQ = limit of quantitation
